New Year, New Pipes

Many New Englander revelers rang in the new year with frozen pipe burst putting a damper on their celebrations.

According to the National Weather Service in Taunton, Boston has broken a nearly 100-year-old record for lowest high temperature on Dec. 28 2017.  The record, set in 1924, was 18 degrees. Thursday’s lowest high temperature was 12 degrees — 6 degrees lower than the previous record.  And to add insult to injury the cold spell lasted the remainder of the week.

Water freezing and expanding within the pipes turns these heavy duty metal cylinders into malleable material.

Town Water Main Break Wreaks Havoc

A town's water main break resulted in flooding two townhomes' basements.  A water main is an underground pipe that delivers water to the customer's service pipe. In residential areas it usually runs under the street. If a hole or crack develops in the pipe, the water will typically find its way to the surface. Because the water main is under pressure, water will continue to flow until the break is repaired.  Arctic weather temps can also be to blame for water main breaks. As the fridge air temps cause rapid winter freeze-thaw cycle of the ground surrounding the pipes is what causes mains to flex and, in some cases, break apart.

Always Replace Fire Extinguishers

The fire extinguisher powder may have caused quite the mess, but it did save this property owner potential devastation from a small kitchen fire.

In addition, even if you only discharged a little of the fire extinguisher, the cylinder still needs to be replaced or refilled. If you don’t, it won’t be able to help protect your home if another fire breaks out. Call a local, licensed fire protection company to ensure that all of your fire protection systems (from the sprinkler to the individual extinguishers) are still ready to protect your life and property in the next disaster.
